Parent - FAQs

What student numbers by Trade is the ATC-G planning for 2008?
Generally class sizes are multiples of 12, the number of classes will be determined by the level of Industry support and student applications.

What happens to the student after completing Years 11 and 12 at the ATC-G?
The student is available for full time employment or further post secondary study. All ATC students have indicated that they wish to complete their apprenticeship after ATC studies.

Are students eligible for concession for travel?
Yes, more information can be obtained by calling the ATC-G office.

Is the ten weeks’ work experience a complete block or spread out?
On the job training is completed in five two week blocks spread throughout the school year.

Will students who do not have any work experience be penalised in the selection process?
No. However the ATC-G considers some work experience to be necessary before a final offer of enrolment is made. Work experience can be completed in the student’s existing school under the ‘Work Experience Program’. Further advice can be obtained by discussion with your existing school or calling the ATC-G office.

Are jobs guaranteed after completion of ATC-G studies?
No. The ATC-G cannot guarantee a job. If the student has adequately completed his Year 11 and 12 studies, completed the first two years of Trade school and been employed on a part time basis for twenty weeks, he or she is in a very strong position to secure employment in the chosen trade area.

What is the difference between a normal school and the ATC-G?
The ATC-G is 100% focussed on successful trade career outcomes. Students will complete Years 11 and 12 whilst undertaking 1st and 2nd Year apprentice trade training and being employed as Certificate III part time apprentices for a minimum of 20 weeks. Every effort is made to ensure that classroom delivery is relevant to the chosen trade area.

If as student can’t get into their first industry stream choice can they choose something else?
Yes. But all parties need to ensure they are comfortable with what amounts to a new career choice.

What do you look for in an employer of ATC-G students?
The ATC-G seeks to secure employment opportunities with employers who understand the importance of having a well trained workforce and who are committed to providing a safe and healthy work place.

How is the VCE regarded as a University entrance?
If a student wishes to pursue a Tertiary education then there are three recognised pathways for students from the ATCG.
1: VCE with a Tertiary Entrance Score
2: A Diploma or Certificate IV which many apprentices now complete part time during the last two years of their apprenticeship.
3: Sit the STAT – Special Tertiary Admissions Test which can be sat anytime after completing year 12.
Further information regarding these matters can be discussed with your current school.

What pay rates are ATC-G apprentices entitled once Secondary studies are complete?
A student who has undertaken a Australian School based Apprenticeship will transfer to full time employment as a second year apprentice and be subject to the award conditions of any other second year apprentice.

My child is in Year 10 but not academic, will that exclude them?
To successfully complete the apprenticeships offered by the ATC-G a minimum level of academic ability is required. The ATC-G conducts assessment testing for applicants which will indicate suitability to the chosen industry stream.

Is there a possibility that a ‘normal’ apprenticeship is available?
The ATC-G model requires commitment from parents, students and employers to completion of Year 11 and 12. The College provides an accelerated program to a trade career whilst also enabling the student to complete their secondary education.
If a ‘normal’ apprenticeship is desired then young people choosing that path should seek employment directly in the chosen industry at the completion of secondary education.

My child is good with their hands but doesn’t know what they want to do, what should they do?
It is important that students applying to the ATC-G are committed to a preferred trade, the student should consider what he enjoys doing e.g. inside/outside, metal or wood etc. and seek to gain some work experience in that area. Work experience can be completed in the student’s existing school under the ‘Work Experience Program’. Further advice can be obtained by discussion with your existing school or calling the ATC-G office.

We live in the country, what arrangements exist for transport assistance?
The ATC-G is a registered private school and falls under State government   transport arrangements for secondary students. Transport availability is dependent on residential address and availability of service. Contact should be made available with the ATC-G office for further details.

What are the hours of operation of the College?
The College strives to achieve an environment that replicates expectations of the workplace. As a result issues of timekeeping, attendance and uniform protocols are closely monitored and positively reinforced. Students are required to attend trade school at Boundary Rd East Geelong; commencement of trade school is 8 am sharp, academic school days commence at 8.40 sharp. ATC-G students are also employed as part time apprentices and are required to attend the workplace for a minimum ten weeks per year.  Start times in these areas are generally 7.00 to 7.30 am dependent on the individual workplace and industry.

When is the cut off time for applications?
Applications should be forwarded to the ATC-G as soon as possible. Please contact the ATC-G for specific application closing dates.

Are students signed up as apprentices?
It is expected that the majority of students will be signed into registered training agreements as Certificate III apprentices. For a number of reasons it may not always be possible for this to be achieved.  In this case students will gain workplace experience under the conditions of Structured Workplace Learning and be presented to employment opportunities as they arise.
