Culture & Care
What sort of help and support is available?
Given the complexity of the learning programs that are possible within the College’s curriculum, particular attention has been directed to establishing a positive culture, high quality pastoral care, and career and further study guidance and advice.
The College has adopted a model that integrates pastoral care with pathways guidance and advice. The model also connects pastoral care with the College’s curriculum. The ATC-G model of pastoral care requires all College staff, including the College’s Industry Liaison Officers, to develop supportive relationships with up to fifteen students, each of whom they meet for twenty to thirty minutes per fortnight either in small groups or individually.
As advocates for the students in their groups, College staff will provide personal and educational support to students. This pastoral care arrangement will become one avenue for students’ views for improvements in the College’s curriculum to be canvassed. Timetable time will be set aside in each week for advocacy sessions.
The key component of the model is the one-to-one relationship between each student in the College and a teacher/advocate who undertakes specific responsibilities with regard to the students in his/her advocacy group. The objectives of the ATC-G pastoral care
model are: |
- To improve the connection of students to the vision of the College and to the opportunities available through their individual learning programs by promoting a direct relationship between a teacher and a student
- To increase personal skills relating to self-understanding and goal-setting
- To promote and develop individual learning and pathways plans, leading to individual learning programs
- Improved knowledge within the College education team of individual students - knowledge that is essential for facilitating quality participation of all students in the learning opportunities provided by the College’s curriculum
