Students - FAQs

• What Secondary School Qualifications can I complete?
College students will complete the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Senior. Students undertake customised courses that are structured to address industry requirements for each trade offered.

• What does it mean to be a School Based Apprentice ASBA?
A school based apprentice makes a commitment to completing their Senior Secondary studies while training and working in their preferred trade area. They complete a minimum or 55 days at work each year as well as the Certificate III in their trade area.

• Why do an ASBA at the Australian Technical College – Geelong?
The College structure is set around the scene of all students being School Based Apprentices and therefore can provide the access to training and work that does not interfere or disrupt the school programme. This means that the school educational programme does not continue to run while a student is on work placement or in training. The class work and training have their own distinct times and a student is therefore not forced into having to catching up on something that they may have missed.

• Can I choose my own subjects?
Students will be presented with a customised, set programme of study. This includes the areas of English, Maths, Business Management and Personal Development. A comprehensive gym program with qualified instructor is also offered at the College.

• What does a school year look like?
At the College a student’s year is divided between the three elements of the secondary school time, trade training time and work place time. This means that the school year does not resemble traditional schools and the traditional school holiday programmes. Students may be completing work placements during traditional holiday breaks or in fact completing secondary schooling at these times. This is to ensure that the time requirements of the courses are met and students have the opportunity to complete their studies without added pressure on home life.
